Barry County Criminal History Checks
Begin with the kind of record you need, not with a broad name search. MiCOURT is the best first stop for a Barry County criminal court case. Its C05 scope covers the 5th Circuit Court, while D56B covers the 56B District Court. The sheriff and jail are the right sources for custody and sheriff-created reports. The Michigan State Police, Criminal Justice Information Center maintains the statewide ICHAT product.
The official Barry County government gateway helps confirm the office behind a local record. The county view shown below is useful because a court entry, booking entry, and police report can exist at the same time without being the same document.
Use the county site for routing, then move to the named court, sheriff, police, or state system that keeps the source file.
- Choose the record type and identify the agency, court, or jail that created it.
- Search D56B or C05 MiCOURT for a case, using an exact name or case number when known.
- Call the jail for current custody or ask the arresting agency for its incident report.
- Use ICHAT for reportable public Michigan history, then compare any hit with the court file.
- Request official copies from the Trial Court by case number or party name when the index is not enough.
Two Barry County Court Searches
Barry County uses two MiCOURT scopes because criminal cases can move between courts. The 56B District Court handles misdemeanors, traffic matters, arraignments, probable-cause conferences, and preliminary examinations. If a felony is bound over, the 5th Circuit Court becomes the trial court. A D56B result may therefore show the start of a matter while C05 shows its later felony file.
The Barry County Trial Court and law-enforcement page points readers to the local court system. The image below reflects that official route rather than an unofficial case aggregator.
Search both court codes when a felony matter appears to stop after its district-stage bindover. Record the exact case number before asking the clerk for copies.
Official Background Checks in Michigan
ICHAT is Michigan's public name-based criminal-history product. A search costs $10 and uses a first name, last name, sex or gender, and date of birth, with other descriptors available to narrow a match. It covers reported Michigan felonies and serious misdemeanors punishable by more than 93 days. It does not include warrants, traffic records, juvenile matters, federal or tribal cases, other states, suppressed entries, or local misdemeanors.
For self-review with stronger identity matching, Michigan residents may use an authorized Live Scan vendor or local law-enforcement fingerprint service. The Barry County Sheriff publishes a fingerprint service page. The FBI also offers an Identity History Summary to the subject of the record through its fingerprint-based process. Each product has a different scope, so a result should be read as one official layer rather than a complete account.
A fingerprint result helps tie a record to the right person, while a name search can return people with similar names and birth dates. Court copies serve a third role: they show the filed document and court action behind an index line. Pick the channel that answers the actual question, then retain the search date and the case or transaction number so staff can trace a later correction.
| Channel | Identity basis | Coverage | Published fee |
|---|---|---|---|
| ICHAT | Name, birth date, descriptors | Public reportable Michigan history | $10 per search |
| Michigan record review | Fingerprints | Identity-matched state response | Local and vendor fees vary |
| Barry MiCOURT | Name or case number | Local court index | Free search; copies may cost |
| FBI summary | Fingerprints | FBI-maintained identity history | Verify the current FBI fee |
Barry County ICHAT Record Gaps
A no-record ICHAT response does not rule out a Barry County police report, jail stay, live warrant, traffic file, or municipal offense. ICHAT is wider than one county court search, but its record rules are narrower. It can also lag when a disposition has not yet reached the state repository or identifiers do not match.
The Michigan State Police criminal-history overview describes those official channels and limits. Its interface is shown below so readers can recognize the state source.
When ICHAT misses an expected event, compare the sentencing court's register of actions and judgment. A signed court order and exact identifiers are also useful when asking MSP to correct a state record.
Kinds of Criminal Records
Barry County criminal records are created at several points. An officer writes an incident report. The jail creates a booking and custody record. A prosecutor makes a charging decision. Court clerks maintain the docket, pleadings, judgments, and sentence. MSP receives qualifying fingerprints and dispositions, while the Michigan Department of Corrections tracks people within its custody or supervision scope.
- Incident and arrest reports: The investigating police agency holds its own narrative and arrest material.
- Booking records: The Barry County jail records intake, alleged charges, bond, custody, and release.
- Court case files: D56B and C05 hold case events, filed charges, pleas, orders, outcomes, and sentences.
- Repository history: ICHAT presents the public part of qualifying Michigan events reported to CJIC.
- Supervision and registry records: OTIS and PSOR are separate statutory products with limited purposes.
Barry County Booking Record Path
The Sheriff and jail share the facility at 1212 W. State Street in Hastings. After an arrest, booking can include identity intake, property inventory, fingerprints, a booking photo, screening, charge entry, classification, and bond processing. That intake may appear before a detailed case reaches MiCOURT. It is still an allegation and custody record, not a finding of guilt.
Current custody is checked through the county inmate gateway or the jail line at 269-948-4804. The official county page routes users to VINELink rather than hosting a Barry booking archive. For an existing releasable booking sheet or sheriff report, call the sheriff's business line at 269-948-4805 and use the sheriff FOIA channel when needed. A city police report stays with the city agency that wrote it.

Barry County Criminal Records: What They Contain
A result should be read in the context of its system. A repository rap sheet groups reported arrest cycles and dispositions. A MiCOURT page follows one case. A booking entry centers on custody. Matching a name alone is weak proof, so compare dates of birth or other lawful identifiers when the official record displays them.
| Name and identifiers | Legal name, aliases, birth date, sex, race, and state or FBI identifiers where included. |
|---|---|
| Arrest and booking | Agency, arrest date, intake time, booking number, allegations, bond, status, and release data. |
| Charges and statutes | Each filed count, its Michigan citation, severity, and later amendments. |
| Disposition | Pending, dismissed, acquitted, convicted, or another charge-level outcome. |
| Sentence | Jail or prison terms, probation, fines, costs, restitution, and related orders where public. |
| Custody or supervision | County custody, MDOC prison, probation, parole, location, and public status within each system's scope. |
Who Keeps Barry County Records
The correct keeper depends on who created the record. The 5th Circuit public counter is on the second floor of the Historic Barry County Courthouse at 220 W. State Street. Published hours are weekdays from 8:00 a.m. to 4:45 p.m., with a midday closure. The Trial Court main number is 269-945-1400. Staff require a specific case number or party name for a record or copy request.
The Sheriff and jail at 1212 W. State Street handle sheriff reports, jail custody questions, qualifying booking records, fingerprints, and local registry questions. Barry Central Dispatch is a separate keeper for CAD logs and 911 audio. Hastings and Nashville police keep the reports they create. Middleville is served by a contracted Barry County Sheriff unit, so its police reports follow the sheriff channel.

Michigan Public Access Laws
The Michigan Freedom of Information Act governs access to existing agency records, subject to exemptions. Barry County may grant, deny, partly grant, extend once, or point to a free online record in its initial response. FOIA does not make an office create a new report, replace court discovery, or release protected victim, juvenile, medical, security, or active-investigation details.
A county request may be mailed or delivered to the FOIA Coordinator on floor 3 at 220 W. State Street, Hastings, MI 49058. It may also be faxed to 269-948-4884 or emailed to bcfoiacoordinator@barrycounty.org. Put “FOIA” in the subject or cover line and describe the record, date, place, office, and event with care. If a cost estimate exceeds $50, the county may seek a 50 percent deposit and must itemize allowable fees.
Key statutes:
MCL 15.231 states Michigan's public-access policy.
MCL 15.235 sets the general five-business-day response and one extension.
MCL 15.243 lists privacy and law-enforcement exemptions.
MCL 28.243 supports Michigan criminal-identification reporting.
MCL 780.621 governs applications to set aside qualifying convictions.
Barry County Warrant Record Limits
No verified countywide public active-warrant database was found in the official Barry County sources. ICHAT expressly omits warrants, and Michigan's LEIN is not a public search. A public D56B or C05 docket may show a bench warrant, recall, cancellation, or return, but silence online does not confirm that no warrant exists.
Someone trying to resolve their own warrant should identify the issuing court, ask for case-specific instructions, and confirm whether an appearance can be set. The Trial Court can answer process questions but cannot give legal advice. Sheriff staff can route agency questions. A focused FOIA request may reach an existing public record, though sealed search warrants and active-investigation material can remain withheld.
Restricted, Sealed & Expunged Records
Michigan uses “set aside” for its main conviction-relief process, and “expungement” is common shorthand for the public effect. Juvenile information, victim details, personal identifiers, protected investigations, and set-aside convictions may be absent or redacted. A qualifying automatic set-aside also depends on the statutory waiting period and system matching, so it may not vanish from every display at once.
For an application-based Barry County set-aside, obtain the exact judgment and register details from the sentencing court. The package may require the approved application, certified court records, a Michigan Applicant Fingerprint Card RI-008, and a $50 MSP processing fee. MSP says to allow eight weeks for its processing and mailing.
The MSP conviction set-aside instructions show the current state route. The official page image below helps distinguish the application process from a private record-removal pitch.
The sentencing court decides the application. If an entry remains after an order and reporting time, use MSP's correction route with the signed order and exact identifiers.
Barry County OTIS Record Window
OTIS is the Michigan Department of Corrections locator, not a full Barry County criminal history. It shows prisoners, parolees, and probationers under MDOC supervision, plus people discharged within the prior three years. It leaves out county-jail-only cases, people not yet sentenced, exempt information, and older discharged supervision records.
The official OTIS gateway explains that scope. Its search page appears below.
An older discharge missing from OTIS may still remain in ICHAT or the Barry County court file. Check MiCOURT for the sentence, then use the supervision office shown in OTIS for public status questions.
Barry County Federal Record Layer
Federal records sit outside Michigan's county and state portals. Barry County is in the Southern Division of the Western District of Michigan. PACER holds federal dockets, while the FBI Identity History Summary is a fingerprint response requested by the subject. The Federal Bureau of Prisons locator covers federal custody from 1982 onward, not the Barry jail or MDOC prison system.
The official PACER portal is the federal court-record source shown below.
A PACER docket is not a fingerprint history and may include sealed entries that are not public. The federal clerk in Grand Rapids handles Western District case-record questions.
For custody, the Federal Bureau of Prisons inmate locator is a separate search.
A BOP result does not show a Barry County booking, and a person in the county jail will not appear solely because federal charges are possible.
Barry County Registry Record Layer
The Michigan Public Sex Offender Registry is a public-safety product, not a list of every sex-offense conviction and not a general criminal-history search. It supports name, registration number, MDOC number, city, county, ZIP, street, and radius searches. Its alert tools can track one public profile or a chosen area.
Public profiles may include an image, aliases, physical description, registration status, reported location, listed offense details, vehicles, and public compliance indicators. Michigan uses Tier I, II, and III classifications with general terms of 15 years, 25 years, and life, subject to the statute. Registration and verification duties are distinct from the court sentence, so the registry should be checked on its own terms.
The MSP registry guide explains the search, status labels, alerts, and lawful reporting channels.
Juvenile adjudications, completed terms, removals, set-asides, and offenses outside registration rules may explain an absence. Barry County registration questions go to the Sheriff, while NSOPW provides the cross-state layer.
City-by-City Criminal Records in Barry County
Local record routes differ across Barry County. Hastings has its own police department and contains the main court and jail offices. Middleville uses a contracted Sheriff unit at Village Hall. Nashville operates an independent police department and publishes its own records forms. In all three places, custody goes to the county jail and criminal court matters route through D56B, then C05 for a felony after bindover.
Hastings Record Check
7,514 residents in 2020. Hastings Police records begin with the city records contact.
Middleville Record Check
4,295 residents in 2020. The Barry Sheriff Middleville Unit creates local police reports.
Nashville Record Check
1,537 residents in 2020. Nashville Police and the village document center are the local start.
